August 2026

It's August, so we're closed to submissions again until January 1st. Thank you to everyone who submitted a story! We received 317 submissions, and we look forward to reading them and choosing what we'll be publishing in the first half of 2027.

This update will be brief, as we're quite late getting it up on our site on account of having taken some time off from working on the magazine to relax and enjoy the summer. But here are some pictures from our recent weekend in Philadelphia:

Unfortunately, Kristin seems to have developed an intolerance to gluten in recent weeks, so cheesesteaks were not part of our vacation diet. Fortunately, Philadelphia also seems to be known for ice-cream!

We did read quite a few of the recent submissions on the train there and back (technically that was all Kristin, as Donald was busy preparing for his next D&D campaign), and have already rejected two Christmas stories. Although they weren't rejected primarily on account of being Christmas stories, our submission guidelines do specify, in bold font, that we only consider these during our January submission window. By the time we open to submissions in July, we've already scheduled the stories we'll be publishing through the end of the year.

We're still editing the September and October stories, but look for Kurtis Hessel's debut fiction publication, "Above the Vaulted Sky", in just a few days. Or subscribe to our Patreon for $3+/month and read it now!

Thank you as always for reading, and we'll try to post the September update closer to the start of the month than to the end!
